A nutritionist, Mrs. Oluwakemi Olowu said in science and human medicine, nutrition is the practice of consuming and utilizing foods. In order for our bodies to function properly and stay healthy, it is important that we follow a good nutritious diet.
Mrs. Olowu added why nutrition is necessary, she said eating a balanced diet is important so as to be healthy. Food gives our bodies’ energy, protein; essential fats, vitamins and minerals to live grow and function properly. We need a wide variety of different foods to provide the right amounts of nutrients for good health.
Vitamins and minerals are essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly but also allow chemical reactions to occur at a faster rate. B-complex vitamins provide a great health benefit as they help to further break down carbohydrates which in terms will give you energy. While you do obtain vitamins and minerals from certain foods you eat, they usually are not enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight loss goals.
She concluded that to prevent weight gain, you must eat no more calories than you burn each day. For weight loss, you must eat fewer calories than your body burns daily. Healthy and nutrient-dense foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins, typically contain fewer calories than sodas, sweets and fast food meals. Shedding excess pounds reduces your risk of obesity-related conditions such as type-2 diabetes, clogged arteries and thyroid dysfunction.
