Dr. Akinolu Olatunji who works with Donald Hospital said in an interview with the Future Minds Development Initiative why dairy causes constipation in human. According to him, constipation is an abnormally delayed or infrequent passage of usually dry hardened faces.

“Dairy is considered to be mucus-forming in the body while constipation is a common phenomenon which affects quality of life and causing a burden on our health. Milk and other dairy foods are considered to activate constipation.”

Dr. Olatunji said Suffering from constipation can be frustrating and uncomfortable, most especially if it is a persistent problem. Some people are more likely to suffer from constipation; such as pregnant women and the elderly, this is because constipation in pregnant women occurs due to hormones that relax the intestinal muscle and by the pressure of the expanding uterus on the intestines.

He noted that the milk that most of us buy is considered to be a processed food it has undergone some processing before being sold to people who consume them. This processed milk may contain some antibiotics and hormones from the cows it is gotten from, and most are pasteurized in order to kill off milk-borne bacteria. However this pasteurization process also removes valuable enzymes that help us to digest the milk, as well as other important vitamins and minerals, thus our bowel get irritated and there by lead to constipation.

He added that constipation from milk could be caused by milk intolerance. Milk intolerance is not a milk allergy, which causes diarrhea. Milk intolerance is more common in children and is typically accompanied by eczema, asthma-like symptoms and ear infections. Milk protein intolerance is the result of the small intestine not being able to digest the proteins in milk. This causes the stool to harden and reduces the motility of the colon thereby reducing ability of the colon to expel the waste.

He concluded that milk and other dairy products are considered to be damp forming foods, which may also go some way to explaining why they can cause constipation and digestive problems.
